It’s not uncommon for a corporate wellness program to be dropped on the lap of the Human Resources Director or Office Manager — who, invariably, has a desk already overflowing with projects and deadlines. So, if that’s the situation you’re in, here are some basics to get your corporate wellness program started with ease!

1. Start small.

There’s no reason you can’t implement a few wellness activities at once, but don’t feel you need to put everything into motion from the beginning.

Start with a few things and grow from there.

Your wellness program will be more sustainable if everyone can see the success of the early initiatives. In fact, it will motivate people to try the next step!

And don’t forget the little things — your employees may be just as helped with their nutrition goals by a new selection of items in the vending machine as by a weight-loss program.

So, think how you can include healthier options at staff meetings and in snack areas. Think how changes in break times or landscaping could promote more walking or biking.

And don’t forget mental health, too! People may not want to admit that stress or depression are a burden for them, so conduct anonymous surveys whenever possible to gauge your employees’ need for this information.

2. Choose your measures.

Once you know your goals, you’ll want to be able to show your activities made a difference.

Some companies may just want to gauge enthusiasm by seeing how many employees participate. Other companies may want to compare absentee rates before and after a wellness intervention. Others may want to see who has lost weight.

Whatever you choose, you’ll want to gather baseline data so you’ll have something to compare your results to.

Your measures don’t need to be anything fancy — simple surveys or counts will do. But do be careful if you collect any data of a personal or medical nature (such as

weight), since that could put you in violation of HIPAA privacy requirements (talk to a lawyer on this one!).

3. Decide on your goals.

Once you’ve surveyed your team, some issues are going to stand out over others. What are they? Are they something you can address?

Think about what’s most important to your employees, as well as what’s most feasible for your company and budget.

It may not be what you think.

Perhaps you were envisioning an in-house Pilate’s course but what people wanted most was a chair massage.

Maybe you thought people would want to lose weight, when all they really wanted was more flexible start times.

Wellness means different things to different people — and you’ll learn a lot about what motivates your team by what wellness activities they wish for.
